Mixed Media Sculpture - Buildings
inspired by artwork of Beverly Buchannan
student artwork
This is one of my favorite lessons, despite being incredibly messy. The lesson starts with showing a 20 minute video of Beverly Buchannan work on and talking about her art. She is charmingly quirky, asking her art in progress what she should do next, but her thought and concentration is very evident. Her joyful process of making art from idea to plan to trial and error is a lesson in itself on how art is made.

The students also love this assignment. I let them choose a partner to work with. Choosing a friend, they seem to have similar interests and aesthetics and work very closely in sync. Even those students who do not normally show much interest in art become totally involved in this project. They achieve what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls “Flow,” a total immersion in an activity. Though this is something that I try to stimulate in other lessons, none accomplishes “Flow” as unanimously as this one. Through their own efforts, the students are making ongoing creative decisions on aesthetic and structural problems.
